Will you share examples for Remote classes?
Karin Huggens
02:23:31
TY!
John Bozeman
02:23:48
In science, the word "experiment" comes from the word "experience."
Ginny Holloway
02:23:56
Are you talking mostly about sending students out on their own, or are you thinking about experiences where the professor goes with the students.
Jessica Sitnik
02:24:14
I would think it could even be within the classroom
Ilse Silva-Krott
02:24:24
Apply theory to practice adds relevance to learners and engagement. Remote classes benefit from student sharing their experiences.
Jessica Sitnik
02:25:18
when we talk about protein folding, I give them all wire and have them fold their own proteins and then shake them out and talk about each layer as they add them
John Bozeman
02:25:20
Is there ever an accreditation issue? Lab hours and practicum hours are different from "lecture hours," at least in the eyes of traditional accreditors!
Jessica Sitnik
02:25:24
and then we talk about what they saw
Roberta Heffernan
02:29:32
Big roadblock with security issues in the hospitals now.
Jessica Sitnik
02:29:43
yeah
Michelle Capozzoli
02:29:50
Absolutely Ginny - and we've had to revisit this as a discipline. Discussions about professionalism have to take place early and often in EDU 200 specifically.
Jessica Sitnik
02:29:56
labs too, especially for students under 18
Jessica Sitnik
02:30:06
at places that aren't NOVA there are a lot of rules
Anna Freerksen
02:31:14
Jessica, that’s such a great idea! I’m going to use that.
Jessica Sitnik
02:31:14
yeah, there are a lot of things to consider with students who aren't used to what many of us think of as normal
Jessica Sitnik
02:32:47
that's wonderful, I remember doing that kind of thing and feeling very uncomfortable because it was clear that I wasn't welcome to be involved
Jessica Sitnik
02:32:59
cooking and baking are great for chemistry too
Jessica Sitnik
02:34:20
there are also games you can play, I have one for evolution and phylogeny that the students really enjoy that helps them practice nodes and branches
Jen Daniels (she/her)
02:34:25
Just a heads up, too, for all of you inspired to plan field trips or other experiences, there is, of course, a form for that 125-081.
Jessica Sitnik
02:34:34
forms for everything
jessica gardner
02:34:41
Exactly- some of my students have never used crayons. It's amazing how diverse our students are and what they can teach us and each other.
Jessica Sitnik
02:34:49
for sure
Jessica Sitnik
02:35:54
students really appreciate real world applications of things, particularly when it's something not in their major so they are not sure why they should care
Jennifer Rainey
02:37:01
https://xlearnconferenceva.org/
Jessica Sitnik
02:37:02
lots of my intro Bio students don't care about biology, so getting them to see how what they are learning can make them better self advocates in their health or help them garden/take care of pets/understand government policy etc. really helps them
Jessica Sitnik
02:37:05
and it's fun
Jessica Sitnik
02:37:24
is this going to happen in other years too?
Jessica Sitnik
02:37:35
I can't go this year :(
Kristin Balbuena
02:38:25
@Jessica Sitnik, the idea is that the VCCS will host this every year. I think it's Piedmont, but Jen can correct me, that is vying to host next year.
Jessica Sitnik
02:38:38
that would be wonderful
Jessica Sitnik
02:39:09
sad I can't come this year so looking forward to coming next year :)
Ginny Holloway
02:39:20
can you share a link to this conference
Kristin Balbuena
02:39:40
https://xlearnconferenceva.org/
Stephanie Harm
02:39:42
https://xlearnconferenceva.org/
Ginny Holloway
02:42:29
thanks
Deborah
02:43:01
How is the conference being announced to students?
Susan Gower
02:43:15
Do you need faculty volunteers to help at the conference? [The "form" doesn't allow to identify as a faculty member.]
Deborah
02:43:31
I will definitely volunteer!!
Dali Tan
02:43:48
Will NOVA high school DE enrolled students be able to participate?
Thales Rebouças
02:44:50
Some students appear to simply get the "right answers" and a full grade. I would add that to prepare and successfully complete an experiment is not enough, since to elaborate on the consequences of their actions and findings, as I see it, is the most important aspect of their learning.
Emily Miller, MEC Tutoring Services Coordinator
02:45:26
would drafting resume ksa's developed from course content slos be considered experiential?
Emily Miller, MEC Tutoring Services Coordinator
02:45:40
*students drafting
Jessica Sitnik
02:45:48
Agreed Thales
Jessica Sitnik
02:46:28
Experiments work best when students are also invested in their design and topics, we use a lot of very simple demonstrations that are less about experiments because they have known outcomes every time
Dali Tan
02:47:02
Thank you!
Jessica Sitnik
02:47:05
essentially demos that the students are doing as experiments
Anna Freerksen
02:48:00
Can we require students enrolled in a hybrid/Zoom course to participate in an experiential learning activity that is not online?
Thales Rebouças
02:48:19
@Jessica - Thanks! Yes, that happens most time.
Jessica Sitnik
02:48:25
yes, we send lab boxes home in chem
Jessica Sitnik
02:48:42
you can also have them do things with household stuff
Dianne Stanbach
02:48:46
Sorry, don't see the link?
Ginny Holloway
02:48:52
That is another ethical issue. Particularly in light of the COVID and other nasty illnesses going around
Camisha Parker
02:48:54
Lots of experiential learning in business - developing business plans

Dianne Stanbach
02:49:05
Thanks!
Deborah
02:49:06
I am concerned that a lot of experiential learning activities we do with students may not happen before February 20th and students from previous classes may not be interested in talking about something they did months (or years) ago.
Jessica Sitnik
02:49:14
and also database work, that's something I have them do in my online genetics course
Jessica Sitnik
02:49:20
that is more like what they would do at work
Karen Bushaw-Newton
02:49:22
Actually you have to be very careful and mindful of liability issues when you send lab boxes home with students.
jpassino
02:49:25
Can students who have recently transferred to GMU participate?
Jessica Sitnik
02:49:59
yeah, have them come back and talk about their experiences and what they can do there
Ginny Holloway
02:50:04
I missed the date for your conference
Ginny Holloway
02:50:16
thanks
Jessica Sitnik
02:50:51
You do, but you can send them. Katherine has been piloting that and it's gone pretty well.
John Bozeman
02:50:54
Why is BrightPoint students only participating in a limited way?
Jessica Sitnik
02:50:57
the lab boxes
John Bozeman
02:51:05
are!
Stephanie Harm
02:51:08
Here is the survey link for this session: https://forms.gle/mvEK8Xfrn4XUqQUL9. We welcome your feedback!
John Bozeman
02:51:19
something I thought I heard earlier
Jessica Sitnik
02:52:24
we have a lot of unique stuff and offer courses they do not
Jessica Sitnik
02:52:28
yeah
John Bozeman
02:52:46
Okay... thanks!
Marc Dluger
02:52:54
Thanks for the shout out, Jen!
Ginny Holloway
02:53:51
Thanks!
Deborah
02:53:55
Idea: cross discipline projects?
Mohammad Arif
02:53:57
Thanks
Jessica Sitnik
02:54:03
I want to do that Deborah
Karin Huggens
02:54:06
TY!

Chris Eninger
02:54:17
yeah I like that idea Deborah
Jessica Sitnik
02:54:22
I do a barcoding lab with my genetics students and it would be fun to have evology students collect things for us to barcode
