Students do not know what they are signing up for - ie the difference between a in-person/hybrid/ virtual/asynchronous class.
Martin Bredeck
05:23:43
Students need to know the expectations we have of a college student: unwritten rules not usually learned in high school
Barry Falk
05:24:58
I don't have the slightest idea how to fix this, but...I am continually stunned by how many students will not or can not be bothered to simply read instructions that instructors or administrators have made available to them from day 1 of class.
Nathan Mueller
05:25:13
I think that orientation should include information about the libraries!
Fran Oquendo
05:26:08
They need to know how to navigate Canvas.
Barry Falk
05:26:44
And that is not necessarily a readiness issue, so feel free to ignore.
Meghan Sullivan
05:28:24
I am taking notes on all that is being put in the caht. Thank you!
Idalia Rodriguez
05:29:30
Yes Deanna! Asking how they buy books seems excessive lack of knowledge.
Susan Gower
05:29:45
I totally agree with Deanna!!!
Fran Oquendo
05:30:43
Is it possible to do a Canvas course for Orientation?
Rebecca Walter
05:31:19
Like our mandatory training?
Fran Oquendo
05:31:38
It could be required before they get access to their courses.
Kim Grewe
05:36:56
Do you remember Ginny from the VCCS?

It would be helpful to post announcements across department shells. Canvas admin can do it, but as Department Head, I cannot.
Martin Bredeck
05:38:54
Not Marty (Karen)--Students need to make sure they know what campus their courses are on.

I'm so thankful we are having these conversations. Thank you to our facilitators!
Martin Bredeck
05:41:21
Yes, many do not know how much work and time need to be budgeted for their classes
Cynthia Pascal (she/her) NOVA Online
05:42:24
Time management looks different in each class
Martin Bredeck
05:43:42
They somehow need to be indoctrinated into "College Culture"
Dr. Donna Minnich
05:44:15
This is why orientation is so important
Kim Grewe
05:44:37
I wish "College Culture" could be indoctrinated into the student experience. :-)
Cynthia Pascal (she/her) NOVA Online
05:44:48
When we are working with students who are in their early 20s, they do not have the frontal lobe development to make those connections
Caryl Greenfield
05:45:03
It's like that in my science classes. That's because in high school there is no penalty whatsoever for turning work in late. Students see NOVA as an extension of high school, and it encourages irresponsibility.
Cynthia Pascal (she/her) NOVA Online

I agree Amira
Kim Grewe
05:55:08
I'd like to think about how to better communicate with students. What is stopping them from coming to see us? What aren't we doing or providing?
Cynthia Pascal (she/her) NOVA Online
05:55:28
We get months to complete the mandatory training. Would it be possible to do ongoing training and block enrollment for the next semester? What types of bottlenects/obstacles would this create for students, faculty, and staf?
Edward’s iPhone
05:55:48
we have sdv. can’t we mandate that first sem? what happened to that idea?
Kim Grewe
05:56:17
@Edward, that was one of my questions
Cynthia Pascal (she/her) NOVA Online
05:56:23
We still have it mandated but it does not cover these learning outcomes (nor should it)
Kim Grewe
05:56:33
What does an orientation offer that is not offered in SDV
Cynthia Pascal (she/her) NOVA Online
05:57:15
SDV has very specific learning outcomes... just like math, psych, etc. Orientations SLOs and SDVs are different
Kristy Balbuena
05:58:00
These are the SDV Course Objectives:• Students will identify their learning preferences and how they could apply appropriate academic life management strategies in a variety of learning environments.• Students will practice how to communicate effectively in academic and professional situations.• Students will explain how diversity, equity, and inclusion impacts the student experience.• Students will use career assessments and resources to research and evaluate potential career objectives and academic goals.• Students will develop an academic plan for a program of study at NOVA that aligns with transfer or career goals
Cynthia Pascal (she/her) NOVA Online
05:58:38
Thanks Kristy!
Kim Grewe
05:58:41
This SLO relates to orientation: Students will practice how to communicate effectively in academic and professional situations.
Cynthia Pascal (she/her) NOVA Online
05:59:11
The SDV SLOs ar3e mandated by VCCS
Idalia Rodriguez
05:59:46
Absolutely Donna!
Kim Grewe
05:59:56
I understand, Cynthia. I was just trying to differentiate between SDV and orientation. . . Thank you so much.
Susan Gower
06:00:12
Bravo, Dr. Minnich!!!
Mercedes Ashby
06:00:19
Student orientation is the beginning of the college experience
Martin Bredeck
06:00:42
...and Orientation needs to communicate to them that this is not High School, and they are to be treated as adults now.
Meghan Sullivan
06:01:12
I like that, Mercedes
Lara Langdon
06:02:27
It seems like this could be an optional CANVAS "course" set up in every student's account who enrolls in one or more courses in any given semester
Amira Alexander
06:02:59
I think while the outcomes of SDV are similar to the purpose of an orientation, there are still a population of students that are not getting that information prior to the start of class. Topics such as financial aid and course selection(without the guidance of an academic advisor that's not assigned to them) aren't helpful after they are already registered in classes
Idalia Rodriguez
06:03:10
Excellent Cathleen.
Kim Grewe
06:03:20
@Lara, I like how you are thinking. I want the orientation to be personal and customized to our students and not generic for college in general.
Martin Bredeck
06:03:53
1. follow directions, 2. self-advocate, 3. communicate professionally, 4. Put in the necessary work and effort, 5. be honest, 5. stay organized
Kim Grewe

Nathan Mueller
06:04:54
Much of the information that they ought to know is in the College Catalog. We could use that as a basis for the content of an orientation session.
Sarah Sweetman
06:05:58
That is part of SDV. They actually map out their entire semester in the assignment.
